“I don’t see the point in reading books,” a friend once told me.
And although I was at first surprised at that statement, when I thought about it better I saw how little I used the knowledge from the books. No matter how many books I read, I concluded that it was of no use to me. After reading the book Fahrenheit 451 I came to the following conclusion.
Books serve us for:
- Quality of information – Good books talk about timeless ideas
- Taking the time to think about the ideas in the book that influenced us
- Implementing ideas into our personal lifestyle
I’ve heard that when we read a book we remember about 10% of the information in the book. If this is true then it means that we should read individual books more often so that we can better understand certain ideas. But since some ideas are more interesting to me and some less, in most cases I don’t see the point in reading a books multiple times. So I decided to do a little research and so I found a process that suits me.
MY PROCESS
- As I read the book I follow my emotions
- If I am interested in a particular statement, then I mark that part and write the page number on the cover
- When I read the book I go through all the noted pages and write down the title of that part
- If there is an idea that particularly interested me then I highlight it further
- I further explore noted ideas and study how I can incorporate them into my lifestyle
We are most impressed by the sentences that are so simple and logical that at that moment we ask ourselves: “How is it possible that I did not notice it before?” So the books are there just for the reason of seeing how stupid we are and how much more we can learn.
